Using the Online  Library Catalogue  for the first time

Anyone can use the library catalogue but only registered borrowers can place reservations on library items.

To reserve items you need to:

  • Be a current library member
  • Have your library card barcode number (printed on your library card)
How Do I Search For An Item
Users can search the catalogue using the following search methods :
  • Author Search
  • Title Search
  • Series Search
  • Keyword Search
  • New items (added in last 3 months)

The Author search option is useful if you know the name of the person who wrote the item. Search using Surname and First name if you know it.

The Title search option is useful if you want to search for a particular book or other item.

The Series search option  searches for series like Aussie Bites or Harry Potter.

The Keyword search option will search on the words you have entered.  This search allows you to search for words (or part of a word) within a title, subject or series.  For best results try a keyword search first unless you are absolutely sure of your title or author.  It is best not to search on common words such as 'and', 'the', 'if', etc. as this will slow the  search considerably.

New Items is a list of items received or ordered in the last 3 months. You can sort this list by author, title, call number, location or date received.

Please do not hesitate to ask a library staff member if you need help with using the online catalogue.

Hint: You don't have to know the exact words for any author, title, keyword, series or subject search

Special Search Tips
Some special tips when searching for items within Amlib NetOpacs:
  • Searches are not case sensitive - which means it doesn't matter whether search terms are entered in upper or lower case
  • Amlib will automatically include wildcards - this means that if you enter a search term of LEWIS C, it may retrieve Lewis Clive, Lewis Carol, Lewis Carl.
  • Amlib will automatically ignore stop words such as A, AN, THE - there is no need to enter these words when searching for records with this (for example entering a search term of PRINCESS will still find "A Princess in distress")
  • In Keyword Searches "Boolean operators" can be used to join words using AND or OR. The default is AND if you leave a space between words. If you use OR between words NetOpacs will display more results but take longer to search.
  • The more words used then searches can be faster and display more specific results - however, if the item you are searching for does not display in the results try using less words in your search or another Search Option)
  • You'll  also find Hints on some pages to help with your search

How To Reserve Items
To reserve an item you need to be a registered borrower with a current library card.  On the far right of the screen, after searching for an item,  there is a Reserve item link next to listed items (you may find some items are not able to be reserved ) Click on this link and enter or scan in your library card number using a barcode scanner  in the required fields. You must select the Branch location l at which you wish to collect the item.
